Rajmata Jijau

Raje of Sindkhed (present day Buldhana district), Lakhoji Jadhav and Mhalsabai’s daughter Jijau.

Jijau had heard of his father's superior skill from the beginning, but with age, she became more and more aware of helplessness of her father towards the farmers bad condition. Jijau did not see this miserable state of society. She wanted to fight against this injustice.

Jijau married to Shahaji Raje Bhosale (1605). Jijau was feeling the strain of the mighty warrior Shahaji Raja up close. Jijau was aware of his secondary position in the Adilshahi, Nizamshahi, Mughalshahi etc. empires. Even though Shahaji Raje was in power, Jijau was realizing that there was no dignity, no stability, no welfare of the riots in terms of Swarajya.

Mother Bhavani's temples were being demolished, idols were being smashed. In this circumstances, Shivaraya was born and with the birth of Shiva, the foundation of Hindavi Swarajya began.

Jijau told Shivaraya stories that started in adharm (injustice) and ended in dharm (justice). How mighty was Rama who killed the evil Ravana, how mighty was Bhima who killed Bakasura and freed the weak. In all such matters, he gave the place of God to the mighty man, and gave freedom to the goal.

‘The goal of the life of every mighty man is the same, to give freedom to those who are in slavery’. was her teaching to Shivaraya.

In order to make the concept of Hindavi Swarajya in her mind in a reality, she gave the knowledge, character, cleverness, organization and superior skill to Shivaji Maharaj.

Jijau also taught politics to Shivaraya while inculcating a spark of accomplishment in his mind. The attitude of giving equal justice and the courage to punish the culprit severely. She herself paid close attention to weapons training, teaching different languages, horse riding, and religious customs.

Jijau guided Shivaraya on many occasions like Shahaji Raja's imprisonment and release, Afzal Khan's crisis, his release from Agra. While Shivrai was on large hostile expedition, Jijau herself kept a close eye on governance of swarajya.

On the strength of these custom, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj broke thousands of years of slavery and established Hindavi Swarajya. From time to time, Rajmata Jijau continued to fight until she saw her son ascending the throne. Twelve days after the coronation of Shivaji Maharaj at Raigad, on June 17, 1674, she breathed her last in the independent Hindavi Swarajya. Rajmata Jijabai's Samadhi is in the village of Pachad at the foot of Raigad.
